Today and in the society we live in, we are less and less surprised to hear the word Coaching, we may not know what it is, we can pronounce it in the wrong way, we can simply know that it exists ... but more and more we are closer to this word and all that entails.

It is on the lips of people, of those who are looking for something new, of those who consider it a personal development tool., of those who want to change something and see it viable through their strategies ... More and more quickly and coaching is present in our lifestyle, where everything fits and where we see that there are methods compatible with each other without having to Close to a unique choice.

Coaching History

To start talking about Coaching we are going to place in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, when the Hungarian city of Kocs, located about 20 kilometers from Budapest (between Vienna and Pest) began to become very popular. Kocs became a mandatory stop for trips made between these two capitals.

Thus the use of a carriage became common, characterized by being the only one equipped with a suspension system for such trips that stood out for being more comfortable compared to traditional carriages.

Thus began to speak of the Kocsi, "carriage of kocs." The term Kocsi passed to German as a Kutsche, to Italian as a cochio and to Spanish as a car: the means of transport to take the person where they want to arrive.

The new carriage later arrived in France, where a coach was already called a century later. In the eighteenth century it was used in England as coaching, a sport of high society that consisted in practicing the driving of these carriages in a competitive way. Later they began to use English university students to name their teachers in their work as guides and guide them in the academic year.

In the United States during the decades of the 50s and 60s, the "coachs" were in charge of training the team members, the same practice of these professionals highlighted that "in addition to the physical training of the athlete, a holistic approach it will include the essential dimensions of the mental and the emotional ”(Ángel and Amar, 2007). The coach from this perspective helped to develop his strictly sports skills as well as his psychological skills (motivation, mental preparation, stress management, emotions, etc.).

From the 80's the term coaching is introduced in the world of the company in which the procedures and comparisons in terms of competition, excellence and need for improvement justified this approach.

But what is it and what is not coaching?

We can say that Coaching integrates different aspects:

  • Coaching is a process: It is not a punctual action but a structured strategy on the part of the coach seeking efficiency in his action for the coach.
  • Coaching "is a space for the construction of meaning and harmonization" (Ángel and Amar, 2007): it is a space for the reflexive action of the client on himself through verbalization and dialogue to find the meaning that unifies these elements. In this sense, coaching is a privileged and unique space for those who want to ask about their wishes, motivations, etc.
  • Coaching as a helping relationship: In order for a relationship to exist, it is essential that whoever approaches this practice feels the need for it. Demand is the first requirement to start the process of accompaniment and search.
  • Coaching as a path of change towards the improvement of the quality of life and professional success.

Coaching it does not treat sick people but it constitutes a guide for change. In addition, a basic idea in coaching is that the coach always tends to hold his coach responsible for developing the skills he needs for that change and how he will carry it out.

The Coach is a professional who works with people to help them achieve what they want. A coach has the ability to observe and stimulate the potential of the person but it is always the coach who finds the answers to their questions.

The coach never says what needs to be done but will help the coach to find out for himself. It will help you discover your strengths, areas for improvement, organize an action plan with which to overcome obstacles in your personal / professional development.

The coach is a professional who works with people to help them achieve what they want, more appropriately as they would do alone.

CHALLENGING: quality par excellence. The challenge is that it will help the coach to achieve higher goals. The coach does not seek acceptance, seeks the challenge to get the best out of the other.
